Whitebark Pine is the highest growing tree in the Cascades – a lawsuit has just been filed to list it as endangered – it has been listed as critical to Grizzly habitat in Montana and should be protected there. Canada listed it as endangered in 2010. In the Southern Rockies extended drought and warming climate have made it vulnerable to pine beetle infestation and efforts are being made to support and protect elders.
Whitebark Pine – through it’s patient flexibility and strength can live thousands of years. Wolf has made it clear that there is a path from the Rockies to the Cascades and to the Sierra for Grizzly to return. Yosemite bears the meaning “Place of the Grizzly”. May the return begin… it may be these elders need the encouragement of their old friends…
